Apple Slashes Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 50% Through Comprehensive Sustainability Efforts


Apple has long been recognized for its innovative products and services that have revolutionized the way we live and work. Apple's recent Environmental Progress Report for 2024 highlights the significant strides the company has made towards its ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral across its entire value chain by 2030, while also addressing other critical environmental challenges such as water conservation and waste reduction.


A Comprehensive Strategy for Carbon Neutrality


At the core of Apple's environmental efforts is its comprehensive strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. This goal, known as Apple 2030, encompasses the company's entire value chain, from the energy used in its corporate offices and retail stores to the emissions generated by its suppliers and the use of its products by customers. To achieve this target, Apple has adopted a multi-faceted approach that includes transitioning to clean energy, improving energy efficiency, investing in innovative materials and technologies, and supporting high-quality carbon removal projects.


The results of this strategy have been impressive. Since 2015, Apple has reduced its overall greenhouse gas emissions by more than 55 percent, putting it well on track to meet its 2030 target. This progress has been driven by a range of initiatives, such as the expansion of clean electricity powering Apple's global operations and manufacturing supply chain. Today, more than 18 gigawatts of clean energy are being utilized by Apple and its suppliers, a threefold increase from 2020.


Engaging Suppliers in the Transition to Clean Energy


One of the key factors behind Apple's success in reducing its carbon footprint has been its ability to engage its suppliers in the transition to clean energy. The company has worked closely with its suppliers to help them adopt renewable energy sources, with over 320 suppliers, representing 95% of Apple's direct manufacturing spend, now committed to using 100% renewable electricity. In 2022 alone, this generated over 25.5 million megawatt-hours of clean energy and avoided over 18.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions. Apple leverages its unrivaled market dominance and prestigious brand to drive transformative change in Scope 3 emissions reduction, harnessing the power of its supplier relationships to create a ripple effect of sustainability throughout its entire value chain.

 

Apple has also made significant investments in renewable energy projects around the world to address the emissions associated with the use of its products by customers. The company has pledged to match every watt of charging electricity used by its devices with clean electricity by 2030 and has already invested in large-scale solar and wind energy projects in markets such as Michigan and Spain.


Advancing Water Stewardship and Conservation


In addition to its efforts to combat climate change, Apple has also made significant strides in water stewardship and conservation. The company has set a goal to replenish 100% of the fresh water used in its corporate operations in high-stress locations by 2030 and has launched new partnerships that will deliver nearly 7 billion gallons in water benefits over the next 20 years. These efforts include restoring aquifers and rivers, as well as funding access to drinking water in areas of need.


Apple's suppliers have also played a crucial role in water conservation, saving over 12 billion gallons of fresh water last year alone. Since the launch of the Supplier Clean Water Program in 2013, Apple's suppliers have saved a total of 76 billion gallons of water, demonstrating the company's ability to drive positive change throughout its supply chain.


Investing in Innovative Solutions and Community Partnerships


Apple's commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond reducing its own carbon footprint and conserving water. The company has also invested in a range of innovative solutions and community partnerships to address other environmental challenges, such as waste reduction and ecosystem restoration.


For example, Apple has made significant progress in sourcing recycled materials for its products, with 56 percent of the cobalt and 24 percent of the lithium used in its batteries coming from recycled sources last year. The company has also been working towards eliminating plastic from its packaging, using fiber-based alternatives instead.


In addition, Apple has partnered with organizations such as River Partners in Northern California and the Salt River Project in Arizona to restore critical ecosystems and protect communities from the impacts of climate change. These projects not only deliver significant environmental benefits, but also support local economies and enhance community resilience.

Through its holistic approach to environmental sustainability, Apple proved that large corporations can be powerful catalysts for change in the fight against climate change.
